More than 50
years after the loss of Burton’s Archery Ground, to the massively
unpopular Hastings College building, the Archery Ground once again is at
the centre of a controversial proposed development.
The Burtons’ St Leonards
Society in collaboration with local residents’ committees are fighting
under the collective banner STAG (Save the Archery Ground) the current
proposals for the redevelopment of the Archery Ground site.
Hastings College of Arts and Technology is in the process of relocating from Archery Road to Station Plaza, adjacent to Hastings Station.
The developers, ‘Gladedale Homes’, together with the construction company, John Laing, have submitted plans to Hastings Borough Council to demolish the former college buildings and build 163 residential units on this small site.
The Burton Terrace to the South of the site is to be converted into mainly one and two bed flats.
The majority of trees skirting the site are to be felled.
It is our belief that if this high density development is accepted in its present form by Hastings Borough Council’s Planning Committee, it will lead to a fundamental change in the character and ambience of Burtons’ St Leonards and have serious consequences for the wider area.
